6 Tips for a Renter-Friendly Apartment Makeover

Renting in Nairobi often comes with restrictions on painting walls or making permanent changes. The good news is you can still transform a space significantly with reversible updates that won’t put your deposit at risk.

1. Removable wallpaper or wall panels

Peel-and-stick wallpaper and decorative panels add colour and texture to a feature wall and come off cleanly when you move, unlike paint.

2. Layer in rugs

A good rug instantly warms up tiled or terrazzo floors common in Nairobi apartments, and defines separate zones in open-plan living spaces.

3. Swap out curtains

Landlord-supplied curtains are often generic. Floor-length curtains in a fabric you love can transform a room’s whole feel, and they travel with you when you move.

4. Bring in plants

Indoor plants like snake plants, pothos and ZZ plants thrive in Nairobi’s climate, purify the air, and add life to a rented space without any construction.

5. Upgrade the lighting

Swapping harsh overhead bulbs for warm-toned bulbs, adding a floor lamp or string lights can dramatically change the mood of a room – and all of it comes with you at the end of the lease.

6. Rearrange before you redecorate

Sometimes the biggest transformation is free: reposition furniture to make better use of natural light and improve flow, before spending on anything new.
